The Smart Passenger
Lift Alternative

Why specify a traditional passenger lift when an OnLevel platform lift delivers compliant, dual-use access in 3–5 days with only a 150mm pit — for most low-rise commercial buildings?

For Commercial Buildings

The platform-lift alternative
to a traditional passenger lift

Most low-rise commercial buildings do not need a full traditional passenger lift — they need reliable, compliant access between a small number of floors. For that brief, the OnLevel platform lift is the smarter specification: it does the same job for retail units, offices, care homes, restaurants, surgeries and community buildings, without the deep shaft, machine room and 6–12 week programme of a conventional lift.

The OnLevel lift is a platform lift, not a traditional passenger lift — and for the right building that is precisely the advantage. It installs in three to five days on a 150mm pit, carries up to 400kg, runs in an enclosed car or glazed shaft, and is fully compliant for use by the public. You get the function and finish people expect from a lift, without the disruption and cost that usually come with one.

Specify a glazed shaft or a fully enclosed car, then choose the cabin finishes — mirrored glass, painted steel or timber, with matching control panels and floors — to suit a commercial foyer, a hotel or a public building.

The comparison

Same access, a fraction of the disruption

When a commercial building needs to move people between floors, the default specification is a traditional passenger lift — and for high-rise or high-traffic buildings that remains the correct choice. But for the two-, three- and four-storey premises that make up most of the UK’s commercial stock, a conventional lift is often over-engineered for the actual demand, while bringing all of its cost and upheaval: a 1,200mm-plus excavated pit, a structural shaft, frequently a machine room, hot works on a live site, and a programme that can run from six to twelve weeks.

The OnLevel platform lift is the alternative that meets the same access need with a fraction of that disruption. It is self-supporting and needs only a 150mm pit, so it can be installed into an existing building — at an entrance, across a split level, or between floors — without major structural work. The complete unit is delivered pre-tested and bolted together on site, with full installation, commissioning and LOLER inspection completed in three to five working days. For a trading shop, a working office or an occupied care home, that difference in downtime is decisive.

It is a genuine, usable lift, not a compromise. The platform takes up to 400kg and can be configured for dual passenger-and-goods use, which suits retail stockrooms, restaurants and multi-use premises particularly well. It can be specified with an enclosed car, full-height doors and a glazed self-supporting shaft, so it reads as a permanent architectural feature rather than an add-on. Smooth, quiet operation and clear, accessible controls give users the same confident experience they would expect from a conventional lift.

For public and commercial buildings, compliance is the point. The OnLevel lift is certified to EN 81-41 and supports the duties that matter to duty holders: reasonable access under the Equality Act 2010, Part M of the Building Regulations for new and altered buildings, and the BS 8300:2018 design standard. Every installation hands over with a LOLER-compliant documentation pack, and Base OnLevel is SafeContractor accredited (CN8516) — the assurance specifiers and facilities managers need on file.

The common objections are about perception more than performance. Will it feel like a real lift? With an enclosed car and proper finishes, to most users it is indistinguishable in daily use. Is the capacity enough? For people, wheelchairs and everyday goods movement in a low-rise building, 400kg is ample. Is it fast enough? Platform lifts run at a lower, controlled speed by design — across a few floors the journey-time difference is negligible, and the trade-off buys you the shallow pit and rapid install.

We will also tell you when it is not the right answer. If your building is high-rise, handles very high passenger traffic, or needs lift speeds and capacities only a traction passenger lift provides, we will say so — Base OnLevel specialises in platform lifts and we would rather lose a job than mis-specify one. For the large majority of low-rise commercial briefs, though, the OnLevel platform lift is the faster, leaner, fully compliant route. It starts with you telling us about your building — we respond with an indicative quotation, anywhere in the UK.

FAQs

The Smart Passenger — your questions answered

Is an OnLevel lift a replacement for a passenger lift?

For most low-rise commercial buildings, yes — it meets the same access need as the alternative to a traditional passenger lift. It is a platform lift carrying up to 400kg, fully compliant for public use, but installed in days on a 150mm pit rather than weeks on a deep excavated shaft.

How does the installation time compare?

An OnLevel platform lift installs in three to five working days. A traditional passenger lift typically takes six to twelve weeks once excavation, shaft construction and commissioning are included. For a trading or occupied building, that reduction in downtime is usually the deciding factor.

Is it suitable for public and commercial buildings?

Yes. The lift is certified to EN 81-41 and supports Equality Act 2010 reasonable-access duties, Part M of the Building Regulations and BS 8300:2018. It is well suited to shops, offices, surgeries, care homes, restaurants and community buildings of a few storeys.

What load can it carry — and can it move goods?

Up to 400kg, and it can be configured for dual passenger-and-goods use — the OnLevel combination lift is the only UK platform lift licensed to carry passengers and light goods together under a single unit and a single warranty. That makes it practical for retail stockrooms, restaurants and multi-use premises where the same lift serves staff, customers and everyday goods movement between floors.

When would I still need a traditional passenger lift?

High-rise buildings, very high-traffic environments, and briefs requiring the speed or capacity of a traction lift still call for a conventional passenger lift. We specialise in platform lifts and will tell you honestly when one is not the right specification for your building.
